Robert de Sorbon created, in the thirteenth century, a theological college to welcome the many students who flocked to Paris. Century after century, the university has played a leading role in the intellectual life of the kingdom of France. In 1622, Richelieu (the illustrious Cardinal and first minister to Louis XIII ) there began the construction of a chapel to house his tomb.
But the Sorbonne is primarily a university, the oldest in Paris and it still continues to grow.
From 1806, Napoleon reorganized the entire French education system by creating the Imperial University to consolidate all levels of education into the faculties, or colleges, of science, literature, theology, law and medicine.
The most illustrious characters of scientific and literary history follow one another over the centuries including scientist Marie Curie, the only woman to be there honored.
Today the influence of the Sorbonne attracts students worldwide. It remains the symbolic place of all the universities and academies of France. It is full of architectural treasures like the chapel that houses the tomb of Cardinal Richelieu, the courtyard, and the great amphitheater.
There is also a persistent legend that the statue of Montaigne in front of the Sorbonne has magical powers. This statue of the writer supposedly brings luck to students during their exam times. All you have to do is rub your hand on his gold color foot and salute him and academic success is assured! Students’ superstition even extends to all other types of wishes!
