The oldest monument in Paris (built in the Iᵉʳ century) is a Gallo-Roman amphitheater in the heart of Paris. The Arena of Lutece (the former name of the city of Paris) can be visited free of charge every day. This amphitheater was originally 132 meters long and 100 meters wide, holding around 15,000 people, and served as the stage for theatrical performances as well as gladiator fights and other circus games. Today, visitors can still see the location of the actors lodges, the platform of the stage and the lapidary elements. The Arenas of Lutece and Thermes de Cluny (Cluny Museum) are the only remains of the Gallo-Roman period still visible in Paris.
