The Château de La Malmaison belonged to a banker before entering history by becoming the official residence of Napoleon Bonaparte and Empress Josephine. The castle later became the heart of the French government (along with the Tuileries) during the Consulate and Napoleon stayed there regularly. After their divorce, the residence became the residence of Josephine until her death.
Many historical documents are displayed, including letters but also a diverse collection of porcelain, paintings, furniture as well as dresses and accessories that belonged to Josephine and her daughter Hortense.
The evocation of the castle would not be complete without mentioning its over six hectare property that perfectly reflects the Empress’ passion for botany, with English gardens and a magnificent rose garden.
The castle is conveniently close to Paris, at just 15 minutes from the Defense, in the municipality of Rueil Malmaison, an imperial city.
