The construction was ordered by Louis XIV whose wish was to house the invalids of his armies. Today it still welcomes invalids but also a number of museums and a military necropolis can be found there. Many French men of war rested at Les Invalides, but notably among them was Claude Joseph Rouget de Lisle, the author of the Marseillaise (the national anthem of France).
This magnificent royal structure houses cannons, a museum dedicated to the army and the museum of relief maps. The museum has a collection of ancient weapons and armor and an exceptional audiovisual (on the second floor) shows “Historial Charles de Gaulle”, about the former French president.
Do not miss : under the golden dome, among five tombs embedded in red quartzite, are the remains of the Emperor Napoleon.
